I've gotten into the habit of playing with the ASCII because I'm impatient when the new releases come out and want to play with new features and don't want to wait for mods to catch their tilesets up. Here's a reminder (opens in new tab) of the sort of stories that the gargantuan Dwarf Fortress is capable of generating. There is no doubt that this tileset is old. You have two options: zoom in or use a larger font (or tileset). Using a tileset definitely makes getting started with the game a lot easier. While the team work on that new one, it's probably best to go for the more stable one (opens in new tab), particularly if you're new to the game. Colors 'colors.txt' provides softer colors than the default theme. The most common items has object graphics and does not replace the bitmap font, keeping all text readable. There are currently two versions of the starter pack available: a more stable one based on the 2012 iteration of Dwarf Fortress, and a more buggy one based on its recently released 2014 update. Dwarf Fortress Assets Tileset 'hezkore.png' is a 16x16 tilset based on Kenran and Nice curses with my own edits and additions. The tiles are square without being distorted and the walls/tracks/bridges etc have diagonal corners instead of right angles. This is my tileset, a modified version of the vanilla curses tileset. (To activate this, by the way, press "ctrl-shift-P" in game to activate the console, before typing "stonesense overlay"). Dvarlin DF Staves is a runic style tilesets, Root (square), Bole (text) and Branch (script), Root and Bole have 3 weights. The starter pack will let you use mouse controls, in addition to integrating the Stonesense visualiser into the game. The latest version of Stonesense (opens in new tab), along with DwarfTherapist (opens in new tab) and various other tweaks, is included in the Dwarf Fortress starter pack (opens in new tab), which is the one to go for if you're not too comfortable with either the ascii or the complex keyboard controls found in the base game. ![]()
